James graduated from Harding Academy in 1967, earned his business degree from Memphis State University in 1980, and his master’s in finance from the University of Arkansas in 1983. A true businessman at heart, James spent his career working as a successful insurance agent for Universal Underwriters, John Deere, and Sentry Insurance.
Beloved by all who knew him, James was a husband, brother, and friend who selflessly showed up for the people he loved. He enjoyed traveling the world, watching college football, and sharing family meals full of laughter and conversation. Universally considered the “fun uncle”, Uncle Jimmy was admired widely for his generous, playful, and adventurous spirit. He met each day with curiosity and positivity, and could famously be heard saying “I’m happy! I’m always happy.” More than anything, he loved living everyday life with Carolyn, his loving high school sweetheart, best friend, and bride of 54 years. Carolyn and James met on her birthday in 1966, and were married on May 13, 1972. Living on both coasts and traveling to countless countries, Jimmy’s career and curiosity of the world provided a bigger life for them than they ever could have imagined–yet Jimmy and Carolyn always made time to host and invest in family.
James leaves behind his wife, Carolyn Caummisar Morgan; sister, Mary Lucinda Morgan Leavell; nephew Nathan Baskett; nieces Christina Morgan (Cory Purkey), Sarah Bridges (Brian), Anna Bourne (Taylor), Abigail Leavell, Laura Jaquith, and Nicole Kraayenbrink (Sam); sister-in-law Kathleen (Alan) Carter; brothers-in-law Stanley (Elizabeth) Caummisar, Jr. and Richard (Carol) Caummisar; great-nieces Lucy Bourne and Haley Jaquith; and great-nephews Logan James Bridges, James Henry Bourne, Ryker Kraayenbrink, Nash Kraayenbrink, and Drew Jaquith.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Morgan, Sr.; mother, Jewel Grace Paulson Morgan; nephew Blake Caummisar; brother Benjamin Rufus Morgan; and sister-in-law Madeline Nunn.
Visitation will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 2300 Hickory Crest Drive, Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, August 15, from 11:00 AM until the Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM. Burial at Memorial Park Cemetery will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to The Blake Nicholas Caummisar Fund of Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
