

Jean Hazlehurst Cone, 87, of Germantown, Tennessee passed away December 10 at Baptist Trinity Hospice House in Collierville, Tennessee. Born August 9, 1925 in Memphis to her beloved parents Eugene Hazlehurst and Charlotte Stemmler Hazlehurst. A graduate of Miss Hutchison’s School in Memphis and Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was very active in several churches, the youth group at St. John’s Episcopal Church where she made many lifelong friends. She continued her church service during WWII for Rev. Loring Clark at St. John’s Episcopal Church. She met her husband Malcolm Samuel Cone, Jr. and they were married in 1948. She worked at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Cathedral in Atlanta while Malcolm attended Georgia Tech. Some of Mrs. Cone’s other achievements were that she was a founding member of All Saints Episcopal Church, secretary of the first two headmasters of Sr. Mary’s Episcopal School from 1958 – 1962, served on the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s and was president of the Mother’s Club. Malcolm and Jean moved to Germantown in 1969 where she was the bookkeeper at St. George’s Episcopal School and they helped start the Memphis Hunter Jumper Classic Horse Show. Out of her love for African Violets, she started a flower and nursery business called Cedar Lake Nursery. The family will receive guests for visitation and refreshments on Friday, December 14 from five o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening with funeral services on Saturday, December 15 beginning at 10 o’clock in the morning. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Cone was preceded in death by her husband Malcolm Samuel Cone in 1997. She is survived by her children Jan Cone Davis (Hank) of Germantown, TN, Mac Cone (Brenley) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Gene Cone (Margaret) of Collierville, TN; grandchildren Bowers Cone, Palmer Cone, Leighton Cone, Haley Cone, Chris Conners, and Jennie Conners; and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the nurses, caregivers and staff of Apple Grove Dementia Care Facility and Baptist Trinity Hospice for making her final months comfortable.
