

JEAN ELLINGTON, 87, of Memphis, TN, reposed in the Lord on September 27, 2014. Mrs. Ellington was born to Greek immigrants, James and Virginia Poulos in Miami, FL on October 13, 1926. Mr. and Mrs. Poulos moved to Memphis with their three daughters in 1935. Mrs. Ellington was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stan Ellington and her two precious sisters, Dena Poulos and Anita Stewart, who were by her side always throughout her life and made a trio of ladies never to be forgotten by all those who knew them. She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Dana Ellington; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Ronnie Grantham, and five grandchildren, Alexandra, Nathan and Collin Ellington and Frank and Stephen Grantham. In addition, she is survived by her loving nephew and wife, Johnny and Kate Stewart of Memphis, as well as her nephew and wife Tony and Leslie Badami of St. Louis, MO and nephew and niece, Doug and Cathy Ellington of California; three great nephews, Michael Stewart, Matthew Stewart and wife Jada and Thomas Badami, and two great nieces, Michelle Stewart and Allissa Badami, and one great-great niece, Finnleigh Stewart. Mrs. Ellington graduated from Humes High School where she often recalled being a member of the National Honor Society and the Glee Club. Though an outstanding secretary for many employers over the years, she took exceptional pride in working for the renowned ear specialist, Dr. John J. Shea of Shea Clinic for many years. She was a devoted member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for over 75 years. She loved the special distinction of being the first marriage performed by the then newly arrived priest, the Reverend Nicholas L. Vieron. She was a member of the Maids of Athens, serving as President for a term; the Elpis Philoptochos Society, The Young-At-Heart, a’GOYA Youth Group Advisor and a distinguished Sunday School teacher, teaching in both the Greek and English languages, beginning when she was a teenager. She served in the church bookstore and spent countless hours over the years helping to cook and man the many Greek Bazaars/Festivals offered to the public. Her church and her family meant everything to her and she always put them first in her life. She treasured her many friends and the memories they shared and often spoke of it. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 30 from 5-8 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue. Services will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, October 1 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family requests any memorials be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
