December 4, 1930, to January 12, 2024
Jimmie Day, 93, of Germantown, TN passed away on January 12th in the loving arms of his family. He is now resting peacefully with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He leaves behind two children, Debbie Kermick (Donald) and Mark Day (Patty) , as well as three loving grandchildren Kendall Kermick, Kerrie Floccari (Mike), and Natalie Riley (Micah), and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jimmie grew up in Ripley, MS, with a twin sister Sarah Ann and an older sister Urlyne (deceased). Life in rural Mississippi during the Depression was not an easy undertaking. Jimmie loved to fish and get into mischief like sliding down the mountainous wood chip piles that Big Mama (his mother) always warned him to stay away from. Jimmie knew early on the importance of hard work, perseverance and getting along with others. Soon after high school, Jimmie went to Washington, D.C., to work at the FBI from 1949 – 1951. While at the FBI he received word from the Postmaster in Ripley that his draft number was coming up; he chose to enlist in the Air Force before being drafted. Jimmie served four years in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Upon completion of his obligations with the USAF, he returned to Mississippi and got a degree in Industrial Management from Mississippi State University. While going to MSU and returning to Ripley on occasions, he met his wife Peggy on a blind date. She was studying Education at Blue Mountain College just outside of Ripley, MS. They married in 1958 and were married for 56 years before Peggy passed in 2015. After their wedding, Jimmie and Peggy soon moved to Memphis where Peggy taught school and Jimmie worked as a Supervisor for Firestone Tire and Rubber for 24 years. He later worked in real estate appraisal and retired from the Shelby County Appraisal office in 2005.
They attended Parkway Village Baptist Church where they met many lifelong friends and later worshipped at Covenant Baptist Church. Jimmie and Peggy loved to travel and would often camp with friends, trek off across the country in an RV with their good friends the Ringolds, and occasionally travel abroad. Jimmie also loved to travel to visit his children and grandchildren from Texas to North Dakota. In addition to traveling, Jimmie and Peggy had a group of friends that would attend football games and theatre. After Peggy’s passing, he and Debbie continued to attend the theater regularly and enjoyed going to lunch with friends and “running errands”. In the past few years, he looked forward to going to Gulf Shores where he would watch the golfers and follow the morning sun from the front porch to the sunset on the back porch .
Jimmie had a fulfilling life journey, and his family is very grateful for his good guidance on navigating life.
