

John George Metz, Jr. age 90, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family in Cumming, Georgia. He lived a full and meaningful life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy rooted in his Catholic faith, family, and friendships.
John was born on May 14, 1936, to John George Metz, Sr., and Beatrice Bryan Metz. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers University High School and attended the University of Notre Dame and St. Ambrose Seminary. A proud alumnus of Christian Brothers, John was honored with induction into the Christian Brothers Hall of Fame and faithfully served on the school’s board, reflecting his lifelong commitment to education, faith, and community.
John dedicated 37 years of service as Vice President of Administration to Conwood Corporation, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and commitment. John served in the United States Army Reserve. Outside of work, he embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. An avid golfer, John spent countless sunny days on the links at Windyke Country Club, enjoying both the game and the camaraderie it brought. Among his favorite pastimes was volunteering at the St. Jude Golf Tournament, attending The St. Louis Church Hole in One fundraiser, and any activities shared with family and friends.
A faithful member of St. Louis Catholic Church and an active member of the Serra Club, John lived his values through community involvement, and a deep appreciation for his Catholic faith.
John leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Michaela McGannon Metz, and a rich legacy of family. He is survived by his two sons, Patrick B. Metz, Sr. and his wife Marion Thompson Metz, and Stephen J. Metz and his wife Lisa Coomer Metz. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, Patrick, Stephen, Father Michael, Bryan, Kevin, John Paul, Brother Gregory, Mary Margaret, Anne Marie, James, Regina, Joseph, Mary Grace, Mark, Catherine, Teresa and Christopher and 17 great-grandchildren who know him as Paw Paw, Madeline, Patrick, Mary Brooking, Philip, Anthony, Paul, Casey, Carolyn, Maria, John Paul, Michael, Margot, Oliver, Frances, Charlotte, Harriette, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 29 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
John will be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, devotion to family, dollar bets and fun dance moves. He will be greatly missed.
