Mary Joyce Calhoun Mitchell
May 18, 1936—June 10, 2021
Joyce grew up in Carrollton Georgia, daughter of Edna and Otis Calhoun, sister of Murroe Calhoun.
She moved to Memphis in the 1960’s with her late husband, Kell Mitchell, professor of history at the University of Memphis. She was an artist and ceramicist, and earned a degree in Art History from the U of M, where she worked as a coordinator for the continuing education department.
Joyce was a brilliant, strong, creative woman. She loved ballroom dancing, sewing, gardening and photography. She will be remembered for both her determination and sense of humor, and for graciously beating the pants off everyone at Boggle.
She leaves behind her daughters Katherine Mitchell and Karen Scheiblhofer, son-in-law Michael Hathaway, grandchildren Tiffany, Joshua and David, great grandchildren Zander, Julianne, David and Dominic, and her dearest older brother, Murroe Calhoun, and his family.
