

Lake was born in Oxford, MS, graduated from Greenwood, Mississippi High School, and then from Mississippi Delta Junior College. Lake worked 9 years for the Mississippi State Highway Department in Jackson, Mississippi in drafting positions. During that same time period, Lake enlisted in the 114th Engineer Battalion of the Mississippi Army National Guard. During his 6-years in the National Guard he completed two tours of active duty. While in the National Guard he attended numerous training schools including officer candidate school.
Lake worked for several private companies in the Memphis area before beginning his employment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Jan 1973. While working at the Corps he received an associate science degree in construction engineering technology in 1975 from Memphis State University, as well as twenty-one semester hours of graduate credit. In 1993 he retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Memphis District as a Civil Engineering technician.
As a member of the Memphis Runners track Club for twenty years, Lake completed numerous 5K and 10K runs each year as well as a half-marathon. In more recent years, Lake enjoyed walking at the Memphis Zoo and Overton Park, which were both across the street from his condo.
Lake was a life member of SAME, the Society of American Military Engineers. He served the Memphis Post for many years as assistant secretary, and as such he would arrive early at the monthly luncheons to set up, as well as helping find speakers, and volunteering for a water station for the annual St Jude Marathon. His servant heart touched many people and everyone who knew him felt his compassion. He was a kind, thoughtful, and caring man, and he will be missed by many.
There will be a brief inurnment ceremony with military honors on May 29, Thursday, at 11 am, at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd, Memphis, TN 38125.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service on July 26, Saturday, at 3 pm, at the Parkway House Condominiums on the top floor, 1960 North Pkwy; Memphis, TN 38112. There is limited visitor parking in the front of the building (all of it is for visitors). But someone will be at the front door to assist in finding parking, and gaining entry into the building.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
