December 18, 1956 – February 23, 2026
Laura Comes Hubbard, 69, of Memphis, TN passed from this life to life eternal on February 23, 2026 after a valiant battle with cancer and a life spent loving God and loving her family, friends, and neighbors.
Laura was born on December 18, 1956 to her loving parents Rev. George King Comes, Jr. and Laura Charlotte Ingram Comes. From her earliest years, Laura cherished spending time with family and friends as well as being involved in the life and ministries of the United Methodist Church. As a child, she developed a love for cooking – making small treats in her “Easy-Bake” oven and learning to make her favorite lemon meringue pie in her grandmother’s kitchen. As a young woman, she spent summers serving in youth ministry at local churches and Lakeshore United Methodist Camp.
A dedicated and determined student, Laura graduated from Central High School (Memphis, TN) in 1974 and Lambuth College (Jackson, TN) in 1978. Following in her grandmother’s footsteps, Laura devoted her professional life to caring for others as a physical therapist. After graduating from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, she spent over 30 years at Methodist University Hospital, where she touched countless patients’ lives with compassionate care in addition to overseeing the clinical education program and mentoring physical therapy students during their rotations.
Laura had two children who were the joy of her heart and the lights of her life: Amanda Laura-Leigh and Matthew Daniel. Becoming a single mom unexpectedly in mid-life, Laura loved her children fiercely and faithfully as she encouraged their passions, supported their hobbies, and nurtured the gifts God has placed within them. She taught her children to love God and love people above all else, and she led by example as she faithfully studied Scripture, chaperoned youth mission and worship trips, and was a steadfast Vacation Bible School volunteer and Children’s Sunday School teacher. For five years, Laura and her daughter Amanda co-led a Bible study through Grace Place UMC for women incarcerated in prison.
On June 19, 2022, Laura was united in holy marriage with the love of her life, Irlon Clinton Hubbard, Jr. Together, Clint and Laura enjoyed many adventures, including travel, concerts, singing in the Colonial Park UMC choir, and volunteering their time in service to God and neighbor. Throughout her life, Laura exemplified her guiding Scripture – Micah 6:8 – as she sought to act with justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with her God.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents George and Charlotte Comes and her brother Chuck Comes. She is survived by her husband Clint, her daughter Amanda Hartmann Westmoreland (Adam), and her son Matthew Hartmann (Monica Evans), as well as her brothers Chris Comes (Maggi) and Mark Comes (Meg) and her beloved niece and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and church family who give glory to God for the life, love, and faith of Laura Comes Hubbard.
A celebration of life and resurrection will be held Friday, March 6, 2026, at Colonial Park UMC in Memphis, TN. The family will receive friends at a visitation beginning at 10:00 am, with the service to follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Colonial Park UMC or the Methodist LeBonheur Humanitarian Fund.
