Lester Curtis Mercer, “Buck”, passed away on Sunday evening surrounded by loved ones due to complications after a traumatic car accident on May 5th. Lester leaves his mother Mary Ruth Wayne, a daughter and a son; Jessica Mercer Whalen (Brennan) and Paul Curtis Mercer, a sister Janice Hale (Charlie), two nephews John Asbell (Amanda) and Jason Asbell (Melissa), two great nephews Evan and Luke Asbell and one great niece, Skylar Asbell. He is predeceased by his father Jesse Curtis Mercer.
Lester was a presence when he entered a room. So many of us will remember the “big laugh”, the “funny guy” and the booming voice that could and would tell you in “Buck Fever” fashion how to solve your problems with a matter of fact attitude as well as much humor! He leaves a legacy of funny stories and good memories. His son and daughter have been greatly influenced by Lester’s love of family and his passion for enjoying life. He was a loving and supportive father, brother, son and uncle. His contagious laughter will be greatly missed.
Lester was owner/operator of Mercer Machinery in Memphis until his death. In the early 70’s at Layne & Bowler he became a talented machinist, programmer and was nicknamed “crackerjack” because of his diverse skills. He maintained many friendships from those days throughout his life.
He was an avid sports fan. His first love was football often watching 3 or 4 games at one time. He also was a passionate supporter of the Memphis Grizzlies and U of M basketball.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 27th from 2-4 pm at Family Funeral Care on Summer Ave. Following the visitation will be a celebration of Lester’s life at the Half Shell, 7825 Winchester. A private memorial “spreading of the ashes ceremony” will be held for immediate family at a later date.
