Loretta Chapman Sams

Loretta C. Sams, 85, of Memphis, formerly of Kingsport, TN, passed away June 19, 2013, at Kennington Pointe Assisted Living. The family will receive friends today, Friday, June 21, beginning at 9:00 a.m., until the funeral service at 9:30 a.m., at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue in Memphis. Interment will follow in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Loretta served as both and Elder and a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport, TN, where she was also a member of the choir for more than 50 years. She was an active volunteer with the Holston Valley Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Sams was preceded in death by her son, Steven Lynn Sams; and her brother, John D. Chapman. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James C. Sams, Sr. of Memphis; her son, James C. “Jim” Sams, Jr. (Doris) of Collierville, TN; 2 grandchildren, James C. “Jim” Sams, III (Elizabeth) of Demotte, IN and Amy Flood (Chris) of Collierville; 4 great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Christian Flood and Carolyn and Jonathan Sams; her daughter-in-law, Violet Sams of Port Charlotte, FL; 2 brothers, Eddie Chapman (Shelby) and David Chapman (Linda); and her sister, Pauline “Polly” Chapman. Lasting memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport or the Holston Valley Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary in Kingsport.
