Lynn Awuondo Ochieng passed away unexpectedly on June 18, 2020, at the age of 28 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born on November 15, 1991, in Nairobi, Kenya. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pamela Akelo Rachier; her father, Martin Ochieng Omedo; and her grandfathers, Martin Rachier Oyuko and Leonard Omedo Owino.
Lynn studied at the University of Nairobi, majoring in Literature and Sociology. In January 2016, she moved to the USA for love and to follow her dreams. A voracious reader and an aspiring writer, Lynn found peace and solace in books and her journals. She loved novels, short stories, and poetry, and dreamed of one day writing her own books, drawing from her unique experiences and keen observational skills, tapping into her deep emotions, and sharing her powerful voice.
She was a tireless advocate for social justice. She loved Kenya, but was an outspoken critic of tribal politics and government corruption. Lynn volunteered as an HIV/AIDS counselor. She was a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights and rape victims, and she fought to end human trafficking and all forms of discrimination.
She disarmed everyone with her genuine smile, soulful eyes, and charming personality. She loved big and hurt easily. She was fiercely independent and unflinching in her convictions, and she expressed her thoughts and emotions freely and honestly. She had an eclectic taste in music, and she loved to dance. She really loved to dance. Lynn will be greatly missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.
Lynn is survived by her sister, Mariam Kola Ndong'a; her brother, Faizul Samuel Anang'a; her grandmothers, Lucia Onundo Rachier and Mary Ong'or; her step-father, Albert Ndong'a Anang'a; and her two beloved dogs, T'challa and Yani. She also has a brother, Evans “Junior” Omondi Ong'or, who has been missing for several years and whose whereabouts is unknown.
In lieu of flowers, a small collection of some of Lynn's poems will be published posthumously, the details of which will be forthcoming. All proceeds from the sale of Lynn's poetry collection will go directly to support the further education of her siblings, Mariam and Faizul.
