

DR. MARGARET ANN EVANS PITTMAN, 66 died September 4, 2010 at Methodist Germantown Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret White Evans and William Leo Evans, Jr., of Greenville, MS. Dr. Pittman leaves her sister, Dorothy Evans Reichle of Columbus, MS; brother, William Leo Evans, III, of Greenville, MS; daughter, Mary Margaret Pittman Graves (Wayne) of Laurel, MS; daughter, Adrienne Elizabeth Pittman Hutton (Mark) of Cordova, TN; son, Steven Wayne Pittman (Camille) of Hernando, MS; and son, William Stirling Pittman (Deborah) of Oxford, MS. In addition, Dr. Pittman leaves the lights of her life, her eight grandchildren: Lauren Elizabeth Hutton, William Andrew Graves, Meghan Carter Hutton, Sara Ashlee Graves, Amelia Katherine Pittman, Meriwether Evans Pittman, Eloise Camille Pittman, and Bryars Margaret Pittman and two step-granddaughters, Mallorie Hutton Caradine and Rachel Hutton. Dr. Pittman loved life and embraced it to the fullest. Her greatest source of joy came from her family. She died as she lived, a pillar of strength with grace, dignity, faith, and love of family and friends. Retired after 30 years as a science teacher with Memphis City Schools, Dr. Pittman taught at Fairley Elementary and Downtown Elementary and completed her career with the Diocese of Memphis at St. Louis Catholic School where she taught middle school science. All who knew her understood her passion and expertise for science education. She attended Mississippi University for Women, where she was a member of the Reveler Social Club, and Delta State University. She graduated from The University of Memphis. She completed four degrees in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership cumulating with an Educational Doctorate. She also completed courses at Wood’s Hole, Cape Cod, Massachusetts in Creative Thinking in Science, New Brunswick Canada in Marine Biology and Wake Forest University and The University of Tennessee Health Sciences in creative science methods. Dr. Pittman was an influence on the teachers she came in contact with by conducting endless teacher trainings locally, statewide and nationally. She served on the Board of Directors for The Memphis Organization of Science Teachers and the Tennessee Science Teachers Association. Dr. Pittman taught Graduate Science Methods for many years at Christian Brothers University and Professional Seminar for interns at the University of Memphis. Visitation will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church from 2-4 pm. Monday, September 6. Mass will be celebrated immediately after at 4 pm. Monsignor John McArthur presiding. The following day, Dr. Pittman will be buried at 3 p.m. in Natchez, MS in the City Cemetery, where she will lie in rest in the family plot among six generations.
