Margaret was born on September 3, 1945, in Beeville, Texas, to Madeline and Louis Thompson. On May 27, 1963, she married James L. Yopp, with whom she built a life and family until his passing on June 5, 2019.
Determined and hardworking, Margaret returned to school and proudly graduated from Memphis State University in December 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business.
Margaret loved quilting, traveling, working puzzles, playing board games, and, most of all, spending time with her family. Quilting brought her not only a creative outlet but also a wonderful circle of friends. She shared many adventures with her beloved quilting group, the WAGS—affectionately known as the “Whoop-Ass Girls.”
Some of the family’s most treasured memories were made at Paris Landing State Park, where Margaret religiously gathered everyone for family trips filled with tubing, skiing, board games, puzzles, laughter, and the kind of stories that become better with every retelling.
Being Mamaw was one of Margaret’s greatest joys. Her grandchildren knew there was one particularly important rule when they were with her: “What happens at Mamaw’s house stays at Mamaw’s house.” It was a rule that undoubtedly resulted in more than a few secrets, plenty of fun, and memories her grandchildren will treasure forever.
In her later years, Margaret lived in Arlington, Tennessee, with her son David and daughter-in-law Julie, where she remained surrounded by family and deeply involved in the lives of those she loved.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Madeline Thompson and Louis Thompson; her husband, James L. Yopp; her son, Danny Yopp; and her siblings, Richard Thompson, Martin Thompson, Louis Thompson, and Pollye Thompson.
She is survived by her son, David Yopp and his wife, Julie; her daughter, Jeannie Yopp and her husband, Cliff Cochran; her grandchildren, Colby Yopp and his wife, Ali, Chloe Yopp, Jon Yopp and his wife, Lora, Asa Yopp, Cory Cochran and his wife Laura, and also Kevin Cochran; her great-granddaughters, Aurora Yopp, daughter of Colby and Ali and Nora Cochran, daughter of Cory and Laura; and her siblings, Robin Thompson, Betty Thompson, and Johnny Thompson.
Margaret leaves behind much more than the things she made or the places she traveled. She leaves a family shaped by her love, traditions that will continue because of her, quilts that will be treasured, stories that will be told again and again, and a lifetime of memories made around tables, on family vacations, and in Mamaw’s house.
And as for everything that happened at Mamaw’s house over the years—those secrets are safe with her.
