Born on June 7, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Marvin was the son of the late Robert and Nellie Townsend.
Marvin is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Paula Townsend; his children, Marvin Townsend (Phillip) and Penny White (Will); and his cherished grandchildren, Oscar Townsend, Jack White, and Isaak Townsend.
Marvin graduated from Bethel College before earning his master's degree from the University of Memphis. A gifted athlete, he played basketball throughout both high school and college, a passion that led him to coach both the men's and women's basketball teams during his career.
For 42 years, Marvin faithfully served as a biology teacher at Bartlett High School, where he inspired generations of students with his knowledge, dedication, and love of learning. His influence reached far beyond the classroom as he invested in the lives of countless young people through teaching and coaching.
A man who rarely sat still, Marvin found joy in working with his hands and creating things that would last. He built three homes, enjoyed fishing, antiquing, collecting art, and drawing, and was always tackling a new project. During the summers, he painted the interiors and exteriors of homes alongside his children, teaching them the value of hard work, perseverance, and taking pride in a job well done.
Marvin was also a longtime member of Bellevue Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of his life. Above all else, he loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose steady presence, strong work ethic, generous heart, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the students he taught, the athletes he coached, and the many lives he touched throughout his 86 years.
