Mary Jane Carloss

Mary Jane (Janie) Baxter Carloss passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026 in Memphis, TN. Janie was born and raised in Covington, TN and graduated from Byars-Hall High School in Covington. She attended Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) and graduated in 1967 with a BA in French Language and Literature. A beloved teacher of languages, Janie taught at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, TN and Memphis Catholic High School. Janie will be remembered for her sense of humor, her whole-hearted appreciation of good times with friends and family and her love of animals, especially the birds and squirrels who visited her backyard in Memphis.

Janie is survived by her husband Harry E. Carloss III, her daughter Laura Blankenship (Doug Blank), and her grandchildren, Thaddeus and Stephanie. She was preceded in death by her daughter Blair Blankenship, her sisters, Kim Henley and Camille Whitley and her parents Richard Aubrey Baxter, Jr. and Virginia Baxter (Black). Visitors may gather to celebrate Janie's life beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14 at Memphis Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Audubon Society or Rhodes College.
