Mary was born in DeValls Bluff, Arkansas, on December 21st, 1917, the only child of Edward and Bess Drews. As an infant, Mary survived the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which gave her wise insight into the events we are currently experiencing today. Mary was fortunate not to have contracted COVID-19. In her own words, her body "just got old." Mary moved to Memphis, Tennessee as a child, where she was the valedictorian of her class at Humes High School. Mary went to work for Southern Bell telephone company (now AT&T), where she met the love of her life, Ernest Lee "Bub" Lominac. They married in 1938. Mary and Bub made their home in Memphis, where they raised their two boys, Charles and Kent.
Later in life, Mary possessed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge, having lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and countless other notable American and world history events. Mary's sharp mind, intellect, and sense of humor stayed with her despite her age. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were enthralled to hear her stories about those times in our nation's history. Mary witnessed many technological advancements throughout her life, including radio, television, telephones, cars, airplanes, and computers, just to name a few. Mary claims that the refrigerator was the invention that had the most impact on her life. In addition to her intellect, Mary's sense of style and beauty as a Southern lady was unmatched. Mary was a traditionalist yet self-made woman, spending countless hours preparing for holiday celebrations and family gatherings. Her delicious recipes have stayed in the family and are still enjoyed with every holiday meal. Mary attended Grimes Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as the secretary. At 83 years of age, Mary fulfilled a lifelong desire to travel Europe with her children. Out of curiosity, Mary even completed a computer science course at the age of 84. Those are just a few of the many compliments to Mary's life in her 103 years with us.
Mary was suddenly preceded in death by her husband in 1963. Mary's strength as a woman and a mother shined the most in how she overcame adversity, went back to work, and saw two boys through college. Mary remained devoted to Bub through the years, keeping his portrait at her bedside.
Mary is survived by her children: son Charles Lominac (Diane) of Oxford, MS; son Kent Lominac (Peggy) of Tullahoma, TN. Three grandchildren: Becky Lominac Bates (Scott) of Madison, MS; Chad Lominac (Shelby) of Fredericksburg, VA; and John Kent Lominac, Jr. of Tullahoma, TN. Four great-grandchildren: Sam Bates of Memphis, TN; Preston Bates, a freshman at the University of Mississippi; Erica Lominac and Alexa Lominac of Fredericksburg, VA. Nephew: Ernest Clay "Buddy" Lominac of Hartwell, GA; and nieces Jane Lominac Ballard, Joan Lominac Nicolini, and Jan Rhea Lominac, all of West Palm Beach, FL.
There will be a viewing and visitation for friends and family on Friday, March 5th, 2021, from 1 PM to 2 PM at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN. A graveside service will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens in the Garden of Devotion, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road, Memphis, TN. Mary will be interred next to her husband. COVID-19 precautions will be observed.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paul L. Odom, Meagan Gordon, Tammy Hayles, and the rest of the staff at the Yalobusha General Nursing Home in Water Valley, MS, for their loving care and kindness towards Mary over the years and in her final days.
