

MARY EDNA HUMPHREY MITCHELL, 99, died peacefully on Friday, October 1, 2010 at The Highland of Memphis. She was born to the late Ira and Lena Humphrey of Memphis, Tennessee on December 5, 1910. Mrs. Mitchell became the wife of Chester Mitchell on June 7, 1931 while they were both employees of William R. Moore Dry Goods Company. Mr. Mitchell preceded her in death in 1986. She leaves two daughters, Marilyn Mitchell Wray (Milton), June Mitchell Wood (Dr. Tom) and one son Sidney Mitchell (Margie), seven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, George Ross Humphrey. Mrs. Mitchell was the valedictorian of the first graduating class of Humes High School in 1928. During her lifetime she held many offices in the Parent Teacher Association, both locally and statewide. Mrs. Mitchell was a lifelong member and the oldest member of Decatur Trinity Christian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for twenty-eight years, President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship for four terms and was employed as the Church Secretary for twenty-six years. In 1953 Mary Mitchell was elected State President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the Tennessee Disciples of Christ. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 3 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, October 4 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Ave. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Decatur Trinity Christian Church, 2449 Altruria, Bartlett, TN 38134 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
