Michael Elbert Matthews, 70, of Eads, TN, passed away of heart failure while fighting pneumonia at Baptist Memorial Hospital on May 14, 2021. Born July 5, 1950 in Memphis, TN, he was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Louise Matthews and his father Elbert Elias Matthews, Jr. “Boots”. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Matthews, his sister Vicki Murtha (Glen) of Memphis, TN, his brother Mark Matthews of Cordova, TN, his niece Courtney Juneau (Craig), nephew James Moore Jr. and his grand-nephews Ian and Grant Juneau. His youngest sister, Kathy Keck, is a missing person.
Mike, The Spa Doc, owned Matthews Pool and Spa which he started with Patricia in 1979 and worked up to the day he entered the hospital April 30th. He loved his customers. Mike earned an associate degree in computer engineering at State Technical Institute as computers were first arriv-ing. He preferred to work outdoors rather than behind a desk, so he went into the pool business in-stead. He served during the Vietnam War in 1970 in the Air Force as an explosive operator transport-ing and loading bombs into aircraft.
He enjoyed travel especially his trips to Hawaii, where he finished his certification in scuba diving. When he was younger, he was an enthusiastic skier, both water and snow, and spent a month in Jackson Hole, Wyoming snow skiing for his honeymoon. He was planning on fishing and golfing, which he also loved upon retirement.
Everyone who knew Mike will miss his infectious laugh.
Services will be held Wednesday, May 19 at Memphis Funeral Poplar. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00. Services will begin at 2:00.
