Myrtice – momma to her sons, Aunt “Mee-doo” to her nieces and nephews and mammaw to her cherished grandchildren and great-grandson. She was a lifelong Christian woman whose joy in life was loving others. She loved Marshall County and Red Banks Mississippi and always was attached to that community. She was always counted on to help sick folks at the hospital and comfort at a funeral, and her Memphis and Bartlett homes were the home base for many relatives and friends over the years.
Myrtice was the last surviving child of Chesely and Mary Briscoe – there were 5 – Wayne, Tump, Myrtice, Wallace, and Chestine. And she loved and supported them and their families dearly. Always eager to hear the “news from Marshall County”! “We need to get down there to Red Banks!”, she would always say. Every Sunday she was in Red Banks with her mother for Sunday dinner and fellowship, helping raise a big garden, with tomatoes, peas, and oh those butter beans!
Momma and daddy were married over 60 years and are now back together again. Momma loved that man, cooked his eggs, kept him strong, soothed his soul, and was his constant companion and comfort until his passing. She made us boys a warm, loving, home where we were always safe. We never went without. They were as solid as rock granite yet gentle and forgiving. We had wonderful parents.
Momma was a loyal friend to all. Her biggest delight was talking on the phone and hearing about everyone’s lives, and telling them she was there for them in any way. Special to her was Sandy – her neighbor and friend and really her SISTER, for over 50 years. They indeed were sisters. And nephew James Irby and nieces Beverly and Dianne, and too many others to name. Please friends, know that the list is too, too long to read here. Those talks warmed her heart. We thank you all for loving momma with your words.
Momma loved home grown ‘mayters, Mississippi mud pies, turnip greens, sweet potatoes, afternoon popcorn, Sunday dinner with family. She was pillar of the East Memphis/Colonal Acres community for over 30 years. In the recent time, she was at home in Bartlett, where she loved her Bartlett neighbors – CJ and Elizabeth; “pony tail” Tom who faithfully put the paper on the porch; and many others and we thank them all for keeping her safe and in comfort in her recent years.
The greatest gift momma ever got was her great-grandson Linus, who visited her from Alaska in March 2021. They spent a magical week together and even went to the zoo!! She said he “was the BEST little boy.” Until her last day, she got up every morning to see his latest pictures streamed to her from Alaska. She adored him.
Myrtice Miller planted her own turnip greens herself in her backyard 3 months ago at age 93. She was held by her loving sons Phil and Bruce in her last hours, in her home, in her bed, looking out her window at a beautiful white snowfall. It was a life well lived.
The Heavenly Father has prepared a place, and now she rests in his arms next to her beloved Johnny.
Friends, now go in peace, and do as Jesus Christ has instructed us:
BE YE KIND, ONE TO ANOTHER
