Mary Nancy Manley Perrine was born January 31, 1947 to Leon and Frances Manley, née Watson. Nancy began her education at Joyland Kindergarten in Whitehaven where she met her very best friend, Janis Forbes Fite. Nancy had a lovely childhood growing up on Shelby Drive surrounded by her beloved grandmother, Gam, and many cousins and neighbor friends. She loved being outside swimming, playing baseball, basketball and playing with her dog, Tip. During her childhood, she was also an active member of the Girl Scouts where she spent many hot summers with friends camping in Hardy, Arkansas. She went on to attend Whitehaven High School where she met many more lifelong friends. While in high school Nancy was an excellent student, a member of the yearbook staff, and was elected treasurer of her senior class.
After high school, Nancy attended William Woods College, an all-girls finishing school in Missouri. After graduating from William Woods, Nancy transferred to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she quickly acclimated to life on The Hill. She loved SEC football games and pledged Tri-Delta where she served as president of her pledge class. After a year at UTK, Nancy transferred to the University of Memphis, where she graduated with a B.A. in History and a B.S. in Education. Upon graduation, Nancy spent time doing field work with the Shelby County Department of Human Services before returning to school to earn her teaching certification. She spent several years teaching history at Cory Junior High and Melrose High School.
After teaching, Nancy began working at Poplar Pike Realtors and it quickly became her favorite job. She had a wonderful time enjoying work, her schnauzer Heidi and her townhouse in Chatham Village. It was during this time that she met Larry Perrine. The couple went on to marry and have one daughter, Lauren.
Nancy enjoyed raising her daughter and all the activities that came with it. She was active in the Christ Methodist Day School PTA and an active member of Christ United Methodist Church. At Christ Methodist Church she was head of the nursery on Sunday mornings, organizing volunteers and was a member of the Lamplighters Sunday School class. As Lauren got older, Nancy loved attending Briarcrest football games and school concerts.
Nancy’s greatest role, however, was grandmother. She loved and adored her two grandchildren Will and Nancy Kate. Not only did she spoil them on holidays and take them on summer vacations, she was also an active member of their everyday lives. She drove carpool, dropped them off at practices, attended countless school programs, concerts, football games, basketball games, swim meets and more. She was affectionately known as “Gammie” to all who spent time with her and her grandchildren.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her brother Nolen Manley (Frankie), daughter Lauren and grandchildren Nancy Kate Fletschinger and Will Fletschinger.
Services for Nancy will be held February 23, 2024, at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Visitation will begin at 10am and the service at 11am followed by a reception. Memorials can be sent to Memphis Union Mission.
