Purificacion Tadiar Florendo M.D., 92, passed away February 8, 2013 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Federico Nera Florendo M.D. She leaves behind two sons, Dr. Noel Florendo and Dr. Fred Florendo III and one daughter, Dr. Jocelyn Shimek. As well as six grandchildren, Dr. Cristina Shimek, Dr. Katherine Florendo, Alan Florendo, Fred Florendo IV, Paul Shimek, and Sara Florendo Daily and ten great-grandchildren. Dr. Florendo was born and educated in the Philippines. She was one of the first female obstetricians in Asia. She established the first family planning clinic in the Philippines and was an early advocate of birth control and family planning as a means of combating poverty. She moved to the United States in 1968 and practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Kansas City, St. Louis and Hannibal, MO for thirty years before retiring to Memphis, TN in 2001. In her lifetime she delivered more than 9,000 babies. She was a member of Germantown Presbyterian Church.Services will be held Monday, February 11, 2013 at 2:00 pm at
Evans Chapel Germantown Presbyterian Church, 2363 Germantown Rd. South. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the music fund at Germantown Presbyterian Church.
