Mr. Richard Russell Vosburg died in Germantown on Christmas morning at the age of 76. He was born to Harry Arthur Vosburg, III and Carolyn Chipman Vosburg on December 9, 1948 in New York City. Dick grew up in Rye, a suburb of New York City, and excelled at Rye High School. He was a varsity swimmer at Williams College in Williamstown, MA and graduated in 1970 with a degree in political economics. He earned an MBA from the University of Michigan, where he also met his eventual wife, Shirley Beth Rottink, when she moved into the apartment building he was helping to manage. Dick and Shirley were married on June 2, 1973, in Minneapolis, MN. Dick worked for Sonoco Products Company in Morganfield, KY where his first son, David, was born in July 1975. In spring 1976, the family of three moved to Memphis, TN, where Dick had started work in planning and finance at Holiday Inns. Their second son, Alan, was born in May 1978. Dick became a chartered financial analyst in 1986. From 1988-1993, the family of four lived in Coppell, TX—near Dallas—while Dick worked for Embassy Suites. They returned to Tennessee in 1993, living in Germantown as Dick became the Chief Investment Officer at Legacy Wealth Management in Memphis. Dick retired from Legacy in 2007 and taught finance for a few years as a professor at Christian Brothers University. He moved with Shirley to The Village at Germantown in 2019.
Dick was active in Boy Scouts and an Eagle Scout like his two sons. He was an elder and servant leader at Balmoral Presbyterian Church and often led vespers services at The Village. He generously supported the City of Germantown with his time and talents, particularly in financial planning and public education. He was an avid reader, particularly in American history; indeed, he was descended from John Howland, a Mayflower Pilgrim who notably fell off the boat on the way over but thankfully survived the ordeal and married fellow passenger Elizabeth Tilley. Dick and Shirley loved gardening (especially growing hostas) and traveling throughout Europe and Asia. Dick will be remembered as a thoughtful, wise, and loving man.
Dick is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Dave (Kate) and Alan, and three grandchildren: Nate, Isabella and Diego. He is also survived by his younger sister Carolyn Lancaster of Charleston, SC.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 2 at 1:30 pm at Balmoral Presbyterian Church in Memphis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to Balmoral Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 17309, Memphis, TN 38187.
