Roberto A. Nabua

Roberto A, Nabua, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on January 8, 1943, in San Fabian, Pangasinan, Philippines. From his earliest days, Bert, as he was fondly called, was surrounded by the loving guidance of his parents, Enrique Nabua Sr., and Maxima Nabua, and later his second mother, Basilia Nabua. He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Andres, Enrique Jr., and Armando, as well as his beloved Aunt Consuelo N. Alarcio, whose influence helped shaped the man he became.

Roberto's life was a testament to the power of education, dedication, and faith. A valedictorian graduate of Sto. Thomas University in Manila, Philippines, his academic prowess and strong character earned him the admiration of his professors, peers and friends. With these qualities, he embarked on a successful career at the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), where his dedication and tireless work ethic earned him the position as Section Head of the Repair and Testing Dispatch, a role he held for over 20 years until his retirement.

In love and life, Bert found his true partner in Modesta L. Nabua. Together they crafted a beautiful life, raising four wonderful children: Madona Syxiengmay, Jessica Vargas, Darlin Wells and Roy Nabua. Their marriage, which spanned more than five decades, was a testament to resilience and devotion, weathering difficult times and celebrating joyous moments with unwavering faith in God.

Roberto's life was enriched by his active participation in Couples for Christ, both in the Philippines and later here in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. As a dedicated Eucharistic Lay Minister of his church in Sta. Ana, Manila, he served as a beacon of faith and love. His passion for sharing God's word, praying for the sick and setting an example of a faith-centered family life touched many lives.

Known for his warm presence, quick wit and generosity, Bert, (to his friends), Papalo (to his grandchildren), was a man who loved to entertain with stories and jokes, even as his health waned. He engaged in debates on social, political and family issues, always bringing his unique perspective and humor to the table. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he helped raise his five grandchildren-- Paula, Paul, Isabela, Sophia and Wayne-- with the warmth and security that only a grandparent can provide. He also showered love to his beloved Celine Parra and Nina Parra.

Roberto's legacy continues through his beloved wife, Modesta L. Nabua, his children and their spouses-- Paul Syxiengmay, Romar Vargas, Christopher Wells, Cecile Nabua-- as well as his cousin Blesilda N. Parra and husband, Gerry Parra. HIs close friends from Couples for Christ, both in Manila and Memphis Chapter also remember him fondly.

In accordance with his wishes, his body will be cremated and a private funeral ceremony will be held thereafter. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals, funeral staff, and Catholic clergy who provided compassionate care and spiritual support. They kindly appreciate any donation to be sent thru daughters: Madona, Jessica or Darlin.

As we celebrate the life of Roberto A. Nabua, we reflect on the enduring legacy of love, faith and dedication he leaves behind, forever cherished in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
