Sidney was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Carrie Wortham Madlock and Clim Madlock, Sr. A proud son of Memphis and Orange Mound, he enjoyed his music, culture, and weather for many years before later relocating to Minneapolis where he often joked about the "burr cold."
Sidney was educated in the Memphis City Schools and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1964. He continued his studies at Tennessee State University (1964-1965) and later at Memphis State University, also majoring in music. His love for music began at just fifteen years old, after his mother took out a loan to purchase his first set of drums. Sidney began playing professionally in nightclubs and from that moment on, he became known as Sidney Madlock, gig musician.
A gifted and groundbreaking percussionist, Sidney made history as the first African American to play in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the first African American to perform in the Memphis State University Orchestra. He also proudly played with Tennessee State University's band during the NFL Championship game in the fall of 1964. His talent, discipline, and quiet excellence opened doors and set the standard for those who followed. Sidney also served his country during the Vietnam Era, spending approximately two years in military service in supply and requisition.
Professionally, Sidney worked with Treasury Department Stores, a subsidiary of J C Penny, and later with Investors Diversified Services. After relocating to Minnesota, he built a successful career with Ameriprise Financial, where he worked for many years. Through his work, he traveled extensively and truly saw the world.
Sidney was known by many as "Big Money Grip." His knowledge and love of music, cars, and a wide range of interests were unmatched, yet he was always approachable and eager to engage in meaningful conversation. He was kindness personified, and there will truly never be another like him.
On December 15, 2025 Sidney Lewis Madlock's, well-lived life reached its final chapter. He passed away peacefully in Minneapolis, Minnesota from complications of a stroke, at the age of 79. We trust that he is already settled into heaven with a crossword puzzle, a cup of coffee, and a sweet roll.
Sidney's greatest legacy is his beautiful family. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Patrick and Clim Madlock, Jr. (Katherine). He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Karen Madlock, his two devoted daughters, Abigail and Cydney Elizabeth; brothers Lawrence (Yvonne) and William David (Karen), one granddaughter, Kyla Phillips and a wide circle of relatives and friends who lov ed him deeply and were enriched by his presence. His spirit will live on through them and through the many lives he touched.
