Born on November 21, 1930, in Jackson, Tennessee, Stennis is the middle child of seven born to the late J. N. & Ada Belle Cain. The family moved to Memphis when he was about five years old and he has lived in the area ever since.
Stennis graduated from Humes High School with the Class of 1949. He was drafted into the United States Army March 21, 1951 and was discharged March 7, 1953. Returning he worked his father at Crosstown Repair Shop until he retired from there around 2003.
He was an avid softball player and coached many teams. He is a member of the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame in Fast Pitch Softball. He helped put together and coach the 1979 Men's Fast Pitch National qualifying team. He also liked to bowl, hunt and fish as well. Last but not least, he was an avid University of Tennessee fan.
Along with his parents Stennis was preceded in death by his sister Rachel Cain Boydston, and his brothers J. N. Cain, Jr., Neal Cain, Rawley Cain and Richard Cain.
His memory is carried on by his wife of 71 years Betty Cain; three sons Ray Cain, Glenn (Patty) Cain, and Phil (Glenda) Cain; one grandson Zachary (Shelby) Cain; three granddaughters Mandy (Josh) Wright, Tiffany Cain and Terri Lou Cain; one great-granddaughter Callaway Cain; his brother Marcus (Linda) Cain, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, September 10 from 5:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m. and funeral services will be Friday, September 11 beginning at 10:00 a.m. all at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38122. Burial will follow with escorted procession at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, Tennessee 38133.
