

Steve was born in Salt Lake City, UT, on Feb. 5, 1954, to Eugene and Renee (Margetts) Penman. He grew up in Bountiful, UT, and in 1972 graduated from Bountiful High School, where he met his future wife, Susan Muncey. The high school sweethearts were married Nov. 27, 1973, in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. The couple started their life together in Twentynine Palms, CA, where Steve was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for four years, advancing to the rank of sergeant.
After an honorable discharge in 1976, the couple returned to the Bountiful area with daughter Crista who was later followed by two sons, Nickolas and Tyler. Steve began his civilian career as a computer programmer for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Two years later, he joined the IT department at Sedgwick. In 1987, Steve’s career brought the family to Memphis, TN where they made their home.
During his tenure at Sedgwick, Steve ascended through the ranks and served in a variety of leadership roles, including Chief Information Officer, Director of Casualty Operations, Executive VP of Specialty Operations and Chief Operating Officer. He played an integral role in the company’s growth from a regional third-party administrator of workers’ compensation claims to a leading global provider of risk and benefit solutions. After a storied 37-year career, Steve retired from Sedgwick in August 2016 to focus on his health and spend time with his family.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Penman; his brother, Don Penman; and his beloved Susan, to whom he was married for 38 years.
He is survived by his mother, Renee Penman of Bountiful, UT; his sister, Sandy (Rick) Wood of North Salt Lake, UT; his daughter, Crista (Ephraim) Olson of Germantown, TN; his sons, Nickolas Penman of Collierville, TN and Tyler Penman of Germantown, TN; and five beautiful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Izzy, Chloe, Brenner, Brynlee and Berkley.
A memorial service will be held on January 3, 2017 at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
