Sylvia Carolyn James Black ascended into heaven on November 6, 2018. Sylvia was born in Faulkner, MS to Amos and Evie James. She was raised in rural Mississippi and loved spending time with her four sisters, Veatrice, Veola, Bernice and Evangeline, all who predeceased her.
Sylvia was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Memphis, where she met the love of her life, James (Jim) Walker Black, Jr. They were married for 55 wonderful years until his passing in 2010. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amanda (Mandy) Petrowski. She leaves behind her two children, Alan Black (Shannon) of Lexington, KY, and Andrea Petrowski of Bartlett, TN, her grandchildren, Scott Petrowski (Katie) of Houston, TX, Chelsey Black of Collierville, TN and Walker Black of Sedona, AZ, and her great grandchildren, Cassidy and Camden of Bartlett, TN.
Nana, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was a kind and loving Christian woman who lived her life according to God's word. Known for her cooking, no one ever left her home hungry. She had an uplifting spirit and was an inspiration to anyone who was blessed to know her. Our Nana will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at First Baptist Church Memphis, 200 East Parkway N., with visitation at 10 am followed by her service at 11 am.
