

Walter Gunti Crone, 88, of Memphis, died Saturday, August, 23, 2014. Walter was a 1944 graduate of Christian Brothers High School. Walter’s career at Conley Frog and Switch Company spanned 49 years where he began as a Junior Engineer progressing to Chief Engineer and retired as President in 1994. Walter was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St Louis Catholic Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Walter was an avid bowler and particularly loved ballroom dancing. Walter remained active throughout most of his retired years and continued to enrich his life and those around him with his quick witted sense of humor and gentle way of life. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He will be missed by his extended Crone, Gunti and Dawson family, many friends and the caring staff at Galloway Ridge at Fearrington in Pittsboro, NC where he lived the last five years of his life. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Leah V. Dawson Crone; his brother, George T. Crone, and his sisters, Dorothy Crone Coletta, Sister Charlotte Mary “Louise Agnes” Crone of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, and Sister Mary Collette Crone, also of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth; his parents: Charles H. Crone and Louise Gunti Crone. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Crone Gwaltney and her husband James C. “Pete” Gwaltney of Big Bear City, CA; his sons, Walter Stephen Crone of Raleigh, NC and Timothy Hayden Crone and his wife Mali D. Crone, of Tampa, FL; brothers, Harrel A. Crone of Bartlett TN, and Robert F. Crone of Memphis, TN; grandchildren: James C. “Trey” and Hilary Gwaltney of Denver CO, and Molly Marie Gwaltney of Charlotte NC. There will be a visitation Wednesday evening, September 3rd from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, September 4th at 1:30 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church. Following burial services at Calvary Cemetery, the family will host a reception at St. Louis Church beginning at 5 p.m. to celebrate Walter’s life.
