Walter Lynwood Vaughan, Jr. was born on November 15, 1952 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He passed away at his home on July 29, 2021 after a long illness. He attended McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN, Vanderbilt University, and the medical school of the University of Tennessee. He spent much of his young adult life working on the Farm, an intentional community in Middle Tennessee dedicated to nonviolence, respect for the Earth, and works of service to our human family. He was curious, inquisitive, brilliant, humble, and kind. He was an avid reader and gardener, an enormous fan of Sherlock Holmes, a lifelong scholar, an intriguing conversationalist, a dog rescuer, a generous friend, a polymath, a Renaissance man. His life’s work was rooted in his tenacious conviction that our sole purpose in the world is to lift one another up. His life’s joy was his grandchildren. Walter is survived by his daughter, Avie Hamilton (Tyler); his granddaughter, Stella Hamilton; his grandson, Nathaniel Hamilton; his sister, Frances Vaughan (all of Memphis); his sister, Lucy Vaughan, of Hingham, MA; and his nephew, Gregory Vaughan (Bayleigh), of Woburn, MA. Memorial services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3245 Central Ave., Memphis, TN 38111 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 28, 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the Farm, or to the charity of your choice.
