William Arthur Elder spent his life moving from farms to markets, flying planes and riding trains, exploring in canoes and working with computers. His journey ended peacefully on Sunday March 17th, 2024 when Bill passed away in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 80.
Bill was born in Monroe, Wisconsin to William E. and Frances Elder on the morning of September 13, 1943. He grew up in the farming community of Sullivan, Illinois where he excelled in football and explored the country on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout.
Attending the University of Illinois, Bill earned a degree in Agricultural Economics. Following graduation, he worked for the USDA and moved to Minnesota with his first wife, Ann Elder. Before returning to Illinois, Bill become a father, a field trial champion, and lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings.
Back on the family farm, Bill also worked for many years in banking, and piloted his way across the Midwest building his commodities brokerage. He loved trains of all sizes, skeet shooting, horses, and especially his Weimaraners.
Bill married Donna Suzanne Elder in 1986, and his adoration for her defined the second half of his life. Their move to Memphis opened a new chapter, as Bill and Susie embraced their found community at Hope Church, finding purpose, friendship, and love.
Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susie Elder; brother, Robert L. Elder; children, John Dwyer (Jeanna), Andrew Elder (Rachel), and Lisa Hanning (John); grandchildren, Kelsey, Alec, Jack, Grant, Anwen, Madoc, and Bevan; great-grandchildren, Reese, Leighton, and Presley. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann and grandson, Jordan.
Services will be held at 10am on Saturday April 6th at Hope Church, 8500 Walnut Grove Rd. in Cordova, Tennessee.
