With a heavy heart we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Sonia Lizeth Juárez Nuñez. She was born in Durango, Mexico to hardworking parents: Manuel Jaime Juárez Ramirez and Martina Nuñez Espinoza. She is survived by her siblings: Manuel, Oralia, Ezequiel, and Camilo Juarez, with their respective partners: Zoila Pineda, Miguel Sandoval, Jessica Perez, and Sophie Bianchi. She was loved and constantly entertained by her 10 nieces and nephews: Gladys (16), Miguelito (14), Lily Belle (12), Benji Bear (10), Lucia (8), Eli (5), Penelope (4), Baby Carolina (2), Baby Elsi (1 1/2), and Baby Olivia (aka Cosita 1 1/2.)
Like her parents, Soni was always a fighter. From the moment she was born, she battled for her life as a newborn totaling five days at the NICU in Mexico. Overcoming all odds, she surpassed the twelve-year life expectancy predicted by the doctors and reached an impressive 37 years of life. Having overcome constant medical interventions with complicated surgeries in her youth and living with Cerebral Palsy, she was a happy soul bringing a smile to everyone who was lucky to meet her. Soni was an academic at heart. Talks about her calculative powers spread around our family, especially in my Tia Callindo’s household on 8th Street. Most notably being able to add and subtract any combination of numbers totaling “Seven”. With the help of our mother, she was always on time for the daily bus pickup, looking forward to attending school in her signature purple wheelchair. Achieving near perfect attendance at Nan Sanders Elementary and then promoted to Rancho Verde High School. She had a constant focus on academics, although she was known as a heartbreaker to fellow classmates through their class field trips to bowling alleys and San Diego Zoo, which she enjoyed dearly. Regardless of these constant distractions, she achieved her High School Diploma with almost deciding to go to UC Berkeley but had a last-minute change of plans of relaxing and supervising over everything that went on in the household at Perris.
Her favorite hobby was flipping through magazines and books, all while keeping a watchful eye on every visiting niece and nephew. She was always supportive of being at every family event she could attend and genuinely appreciated being literally carried into said events to her exclusive spot. When possible she loved being present at gatherings such as birthdays, kids’ folkloric recitals, weddings, communions, and family reunions. She was constantly front-and-center for any photo opportunity she could take. She enjoyed keeping the peace at home and did not fear being the authority figure by “shushing” anyone that was too loud during a movie or letting us know the food wasn’t up to her standards. Whether she was called by her name or many endearing nicknames such as “Soni Boloni”, “Gorgonia”, “la niña”; she was appreciative of care and heartfelt attention she lovingly received. Although she lived a life with moments of physical hardship Soni was trying to put her best foot forward. Your smiling face and memories we had together will forever be cherished in our hearts.
We deeply love and appreciate you, Soni. We will all miss you very much. Until we meet again, rest in peace sweet sister. You are free.
