Anita Gonzales Segura, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, stepped peacefully into eternity surrounded, by her family, on September 26, 2025, in Merced, California, at the age of 83.
Born in Santa Ana, California, on February 25, 1942, Anita spent her formative years in the close-knit community of Fountain Valley, and in 1952 her family moved to Planada, California where she lived until her passing. She was known for her amazing sense of humor, warm heart, unwavering strength, and deep dedication to her family and community.
Anita is survived by her daughters, Margaret Chavez and Delfina Leyro (Domingo Leyro); her sons, Gilbert Hernandez (Alex Cortez) and Tony Gonzales (Sandy Gonzales); her beloved cat Baby Kitty; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy and pride. Anita was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Sara Segura, life partner, Augustine Chavez, and her precious unborn twins.
Professionally, Anita devoted 25 years of service to the Head Start program, where she worked tirelessly to support and nurture young children and their families. Her passion for early childhood education and community service touched countless lives and helped build a foundation of hope and opportunity for many.
Outside of her work, Anita found great happiness in the simple pleasures of life. She loved participating in the Senior Program in Planada, where she forged lasting friendships and enjoyed community activities. Yard sales were a favorite pastime, reflecting her keen eye for treasures and love of connecting with others. Above all, Anita treasured the time spent with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment she could share with them.
Anita’s kindness, generosity, and spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and community that will be remembered and cherished by generations to come. A special thank you to her grandson, Mark Segura, who cared for her these last two years.
