Devoted husband and father, Bill Hawkins, age 87, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at home. Born in Oklahoma, Bill moved to Merced at the age of 2 and attended Merced City schools. He graduated from Merced High in 1953. Bill was a recent widower with the passing of his wife, Maureen, of 67 years.
He is survived by his son Jerry Hawkins, daughter Susan Newman, both of Merced and grandchildren, Amy Newman and Patrick Newman of Los Angeles and Debra Gallagher and family in Canada.
Bill worked for Merced Irrigation District before starting work for the US Postal Service in 1955. He retired 34 years later in 1989 and filled his spare time working for Parker’s Hardware. His passion was gardening and serving his community through Merced Breakfast Lions Club.
Services will be held along with services for Maureen on Saturday, June 26, 2021 At Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Donations can be made to Lions Club International, PO Box 1065, Merced, CA 95341.
