September 24, 1949 - October 26, 2025
Emery Russell Preston was born in Merced, CA on September 24,1949 to Melvin and Marian Preston. He lived on the family homestead in the foothills of Mariposa County until he was 5. He then attended Le Grand Elementary and graduated from Le Grand High School in 1968. Rusty grew up raising and herding sheep with his father and brother. He attended lots of fairs every summer where he won many awards and was crowned Grand Champion Showman numerous times.
After high school, Rusty enlisted into the Marine Corp and fought in the Vietnam War. After his time in the service, he worked for the Merced County Road Department as well as other jobs of hauling cattle and driving heavy equipment. He started truck driving in the 1970’s and became an owner operator shortly after. He was forced to retire from truck driving last year due to medical issues. He met the love of his life, Diane, in 1971 and married her in 1978. They started the “e” Ranch and raised cattle and sheep, following in the family business.
Rusty was a live GPS; you could call him from anywhere in California and he could give you directions from memory. He knew how to fix almost anything, cars, plumbing, electrical, fencing, livestock etc. His knowledge will be greatly missed. He was the best father and grandfather, and he enjoyed these last few years spending time with his grandson, Bobby, on the ranch creating lasting memories. Rusty was a hardworking, loyal cowboy that fought hard till the end.
He is preceded in Death by his wife of 43 years, Diane Preston. His son Russell Preston. His Parents Melvin and Marian Preston, his brother Mike Preston and George Shirah who was like a brother. He is survived by his daughter, Angela and son-in-law Bob Dicochea, and his grandsons, Bobby Dicochea and Johnathan Preston, and many other family that loved him dearly.
