

It is with saddened hearts that the family of Francis Moffatt of Merced announces the death of their father on January 4, 2012. He will be greatly missed, may he rest in peace.
Frank was born February 5th 1933 of John “Jack” Moffatt and Frances Adam Moffatt of Astoria, New York. His family moved to Valley Stream, L.I. where he attended school, graduating from Valley Stream Central High School in 1951 where he was class president in his junior and senior years.
Frank joined the Army in February 1953. After boot camp he served as a drill instructor at Fort Gordon, GA before being assigned to the Signal Corps in Germany. He reached the rank of Corporal and received an honorable discharge in January 1955. Frank was the recipient of a Cold War Certificate.
He received a technical degree in electronics from RCA Institute of Technology. Upon graduation he worked for Curtis Wright at Castle AFB, CA. He then worked for Reflectone where he helped design and build the first radar jamming devices before becoming a US Government civil servant. His initial responsibilities were to install the radar jamming devices at military installations. His civil service career with the Air Force included assignments to McCoy AFB, FL, Castle AFB, CA, and SAC Headquarters – Offut AFB, NE achieving a rank of GS 12. Frank retired from civil service at Castle AFB as an Equipment Specialist Det 3, Director, Air Mobility. Frank was a recipient of the Department of Air Force Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award 1995 in addition to numerous accommodations and awards during his 30 years of service.
Frank was active in the community. He was a lifetime member American Legion, Post #83, where he was Post Commander in 2003 & 2004. In 2005 Frank was a recipient of the American Legionnaire of the Year Award. He served in the American Legion Honor / Color Guard for many years. Frank was a member of the VFW Post #4327 and a brother of Elks Lodge #1240 since 1975. For many years, he was the convener for The Clan Moffat Society for the Fresno, Modesto & Pleasanton Scottish Highland Games. He was also a past member of the Yosemite Gateway Chorus.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen McKerlie Moffatt, his brother, William “Bill” Moffatt and his parents. He is survived by his children; Brand “John” Moffatt of Merced, CA, Sean Moffatt of Post Falls, ID, Maureen Moffatt Amant of Auburn, WA and 5 grandchildren; Sgt. Ian Moffatt of Liberty Lake, WA., Lauren Evans of Belleville, NJ, Alex Moffatt Amant of Auburn, WA, Jessica Moffatt of Post Falls, ID and Aidan Moffatt Amant of Auburn, WA.
Services will be held at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home on Saturday, January 21st at 2:00 PM. A reception at the American Legion #83 Hall will follow.
