Dr. Gregory Paul DiCarlo was born on November 3, 1945, in Arlington, Virginia, and raised in Pelham, New York, by his parents, Hamilcar and Vera DiCarlo. He passed away peacefully at his home in Merced, California, on January 15, 2026, surrounded by family, at the age of 80. His life was defined by service, curiosity, generosity, and a deep love for people.
Greg graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1963, where he was a standout athlete. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Fordham University in 1967 and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1972, completing his general surgery residency in 1977.
Greg married Suzanne in 1968, and together they adopted four children—Chris, Tim, John, and Whitney. In 1978, Greg moved his family to Merced, California, where he practiced as a general surgeon for more than 35 years, earning the trust and gratitude of countless patients through his humility, compassion, and dedication. He retired in November 2013, leaving behind a practice defined by integrity, humility, and deep commitment to his patients. Patients and families often spoke of lives healed, comfort given, and the care he freely offered to all.
In 2007, Greg married Kelly DiCarlo, his partner in life and adventure. Together they traveled, danced, and embraced an active, joyful life. Greg loved biking, hiking, swimming laps followed by long jacuzzi soaks, walking to lunch with friends, and gathering with family. Family life was filled with camping and hiking in Yosemite, ski weekends, horseback riding, bike rides, and road trips that doubled as geography lessons. In later years, he found deep comfort and companionship in his dogs, especially Jet.
Greg is survived by his wife, Kelly DiCarlo; his children Chris DiCarlo (Erin), Tim DiCarlo (Amy) and their children Matthew and Emma, John DiCarlo and his children Chase, Ariel, and great-grandson Israel, and Whitney Brletic (James Brletic, Jr.) and their children Connor, Madison, Jayna, and a baby girl due in July. He is also lovingly remembered by Kelly’s family: Daniel and Melissa Fairchild and their sons Donovan and Austin; Shane and Christina Grissom and their son Cooper and stepdaughter Penelope; Jennifer Fairchild and her daughter Haylee Limon; and Jake Grissom and his son Levi. He is also survived by his brothers, Hamilcar DiCarlo (and his children, Ashley, Allison, and Christian) and Larry DiCarlo; and by his nephews, Greg and James Neufeld, sons of his late sister, Barbara.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hamilcar and Vera DiCarlo, and his sister Barbara.
Greg loved life, and he loved people—until his very last breath. His legacy lives on in the lives he healed, the family he built, and the kindness he extended to everyone he met.
Services will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Merced, California, on February 14, 2026 at 11AM.
