Hans August Buchmann was born on August 20, 1923 in Berlin, Germany. He passed away on March 9, 2012 in Atwater, CA, at the age of 88. He loved to travel, especially on cruises, tending his garden, and singing. He often expressed his pride of the accomplishments of his family to others.
In 1948, Hans married Christel Krueger. They immigrated in 1950 to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they lived for 30 years. In 1980, they moved to the Dallas, Texas area, before returning to California to retire in Twain Harte, and later in Atwater.
Hans was a survivor of World War II. He was a member and Past-President of several German Clubs of the San Francisco Bay Area. He participated in German Choirs in the Bay Area and Dallas Texas. He was a member for 62 years of the Order of the Hermann-Söhne, most recently connected with the Modesto Lodge.
Hans was preceded in death by his parents August and Ella; grandson, Sebastian Garcia; brother, Guenter; and wife of 62 years, Christel.
Hans is survived by his brother, Juergen Buchmann, of Berlin, Germany; children, Margaret Garcia, Gerald and John Buchmann; grandchildren Jennifer, Kimberly, Jessica, Lindsey, Antonio, Lucas, and Sarah; and great-granddaughters Nicole, Caitlin, and Allie.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 1:00pm, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1455 E. Yosemite Ave, Merced, CA 95340. There will be a reception in the fellowship hall following the service.
