Merced, California - Long time Merced resident Henry DuPertuis passed peacefully in his sleep on January 27th, surrounded by loved ones. Henry lived a long and meaningful life, beginning in Wyoming in 1921. He was one of 10 children living on the midwest plaines during the great depression. He graduated from high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado and attended Colorado State before enlisting in the army. While in the army he attended Clemson University and served as a paratrooper in WWII. His father moved the family to California to work in the shipyards and after the war he joined them. He graduated from UC California, Berkeley and joined an architectural firm in Fresno, where he met the love of his life Leona Pinner. They moved to Merced on their wedding day, October 15, 1949. Henry soon established the firm “DuPertuis and Hesse Architects” and worked for 48 years designing many of the buildings in Merced and nearby towns, including: the master plan and design of Merced College, Merced High school, Atwater High school, St. Patricks Catholic Church, and many other churches, schools, and commercial building projects. Founding Director and past chairman- Calvin Crest Christian camp in the Sierras
Founding Director and past chairman- Merced County Bank
Founding Director and past chairman- Sierra Valley chapter of the American Institute of Architects
Past Vice-Chairman- Merced Golf and Country Club
Henry is survived by his wife Leona, his children Jeff DuPertuis, Dennis DuPertuis, Karen Stierwalt, and Leslee DuPertuis, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous extended family. A Celebration of Life and reception will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2:00 pm at the Central Presbyterian Church in Merced, California.
