Herbert George May was born on November 26, 1930, to Maurice Blake May and Ruth Edith May in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of four children. After graduating from Roaring Spring High School in 1948, Herb attended Penn State for two years and then graduated from Gettysburg College in 1952.

Herbert was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was sent to serve under Major General Kessler, commander of the Fourth Air Force at Hamilton Air Force Base, California. His primary job was recalling WW2 pilots back to active duty. In 1953, he met his future wife, Dolores, and married a year later in San Rafael, CA.

After completing his Masters Degree in Education at San Francisco State University, he and Dolores moved to Southern California in 1956. Herb accepted a job with the Whittier Union High School District, first teaching English and history at Sante Fe High School and then as an administrator for Whittier High School, thus retiring thirty-four years later.

It was 1992, when he and his wife decided to sell their home and move to Merced, California. Their motive to move was simple- they wanted to be closer to their grandchildren. Once they arrived and settled in Merced, Herb and Dolores became part-time teachers for several years with the Merced City School District.

Herbert George May, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at his home in Merced, California. For several months, he graciously battled Parkinson’s disease while his family cared for him. His faith in and love for the gospel and faith in God was an inspiration to his family and friends. Especially, as they witnessed him meekly letting go of this earthly home.

He is survived by Dolores, his wife of sixty-six years, his children, Corle’ May, Jeff (Wendy) May, and Phillip May, all of whom reside in Merced; his beloved grandchildren, Julianne (Jake) Zimmerli of Utah, Andrea May of Colorado, and Caroline May of Utah.
