On October 5, 2026, Josefa “Josie” Zuniga Centeno, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and family matriarch, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 84, leaving behind a family and community forever changed by her love, strength, and unwavering spirit.
Josie was born on March 19, 1942, in Nuevo León, Monterrey, Mexico, to Maria Cruz Ornelas Zuniga and Feliciano Zuniga. At just three years old, she came to the United States with her family, beginning a journey that would eventually lead them to California in search of opportunity and the American dream. After spending time in McAllen and Edinburg, Texas, her family made their way to the Central Valley, settling in Campo Verde in Merced alongside many other families seeking a better future. They later called Le Grand home before settling in Planada, where Josie would go on to raise her eight children.
Josie was no stranger to hard work. For more than 35 years, she dedicated herself to the fields of Central California, working from the tomato fields to the cotton fields and helping sustain the agricultural communities that have long been the backbone of the Valley. She carried that same determination into every part of her life, meeting challenges head-on and doing whatever it took to provide for the people she loved. Her strength was quiet but unmistakable, and her sacrifices will forever be a part of her family’s story.
But to know Josie was to know that life was about more than hard work. She had a gift for finding joy in the everyday and making sure everyone around her got to share in it. A natural hustler with an eye for a bargain, she was the undisputed queen of yard sales and flea markets. She could spot a treasure where others saw nothing, and you could rarely leave her home without her sending you off with a great find.
She also knew exactly how to have a good time. Whether trying her luck on the slots at Table Mountain, dancing to her favorite Tejano songs with the confidence of someone who owned the dance floor, or securing a front-row spot at a Little Joe concert, Josie knew how to make the most of any moment.
Above all, Josie’s greatest love was her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and her love extended far beyond words. She was the one who showed up, checked in, made sure everyone was taken care of, and found ways to give even when she had little to spare. Her home, her time, and her heart were always open to the people she loved. The legacy she leaves behind is not measured only in the years she lived, but in the generations she raised, the sacrifices she made, and her love.
Through every season of her life, Josie held tightly to her faith. She understood the importance of a relationship with the Lord and trusted in Him and His plan, even when the road ahead was uncertain. As she faced cancer, she met the fight with courage and the same determination that had carried throughout her life. Though her family prayed for more time, she remained grounded in her faith until her final days, trusting that she would be welcomed home in His time.
Josie is survived by her brother, Mike Zuniga (Mona); her eight children, Susie Perez, Greg Ruelas (Tina), Rene Ruelas (Stella), Harvey Ruelas, Rachel Ceballos-Montez (Marty), Ismael Ceballos (Dolores), Francella Valenzuela (Sergio), and Fabian Centeno; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her love and memory forward.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Maria Cruz Ornelas Zuniga and Feliciano Zuniga; her sisters, Guadalupe Gonzalez, Manuela Cisneros, Lupe Chavez, and Gloria Zuniga; and her brothers, Gerardo Castilleja, Benito Perez and Frank Zuniga.
Eighty-four years will never feel like enough for a woman who gave so much of herself to the people she loved. Though her absence leaves an immeasurable ache, her family finds comfort in knowing that her story continues in every generation she helped shape, every family gathering filled with laughter, every song that calls someone to the dance floor, and every unexpected treasure found at a yard sale.
In true Josie fashion, may we keep working hard, finding the good in unexpected places, dancing to the music we love, and showing up for our people. May we carry her faith, her resilience, her generosity, and her unmistakable spirit with us always.
Until we meet again, Mom, Gramma/Grammy, Josie. You were loved beyond measure, and you will be missed beyond words.
