Pheng Chue Yang was born on August 27, 1985, in Boulder, Colorado, and passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted mother Xong Yang; his brother, Kong Yang; and his sisters, Kaying Lee and Koua Yang. He was preceded in passing by his father, Ge Yang.
In 1992, Pheng moved with his family to Winton, California, where he spent the rest of his life. Affectionately known as “Baby,” and as “Me Ab,” meaning “baby” in Hmong, he was a loving and gentle soul whose childlike spirit brought comfort and joy to everyone who knew him. Pheng was on the autism spectrum and nonverbal, experiencing the world in his own unique and beautiful way—full of quiet understanding, deep feeling, and pure sincerity. He was incredibly perceptive, with a sharp memory, remarkable intelligence, and a deep awareness of those around him. He also had exceptional eyesight, often noticing even the smallest details others might miss.
He attended Shelby School for Special Education, where he learned to swim and ride a tricycle. He also grew into the responsibilities of learning essential life skills. Not only that, he loved his instructors, who supported and encouraged his independence. He later attended Central Valley Training Center, where he enjoyed outings, activities, and spending time with peers and staff. He also proudly created artwork for the Merced County Fair for many years, earning numerous ribbon awards.
Pheng found happiness in life’s simple moments—sitting outside watching his mother garden, observing the world around him, watching neighborhood children play, pointing at airplanes in the sky, waving at the train, and listening for the ice cream truck. He loved his mother’s cooking, trips to McDonald’s for a Coke, chicken nuggets and fries, his sing-along tape recorder, and listening to music on his Walkman. He had a handful of dollar bills and carried them with his baby blankets wherever he went. He also enjoyed car rides and found comfort in familiar routines.
Pheng will be remembered as a gentle giant whose pure heart, bubbling presence, and loving spirit brought warmth, laughter, and lasting joy to his family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and cherished forever.
