

Born on June 21, 1944, Richard spent much of his life in Merced, California, where he built a life centered around family, farming, and community. A dedicated custom farmer, Richard was known for his tireless work ethic and deep pride in the work he did throughout his life.
Richard enjoyed watching sports, spending time with his family, and the farming lifestyle he loved so much. He was a man who never met a stranger. Talkative, caring, and genuinely interested in others, Richard had a way of making people feel welcome wherever he went. Those who knew him will remember his hardworking nature, his generosity, and the love he had for the people closest to him.
He is survived by his beloved Barbara Dean; his daughters, Jamie Souza and spouse Cameron Halsey, Maelyne Alvis and spouse Loyd Alvis, and Amanda Moss and spouse Jason Moss. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Hunter Souza, Philip Souza, Josey Souza, Paisley Alvis, Robert Alvis, Christopher Bettencourt, and Tristian Moss; and his great-granddaughter, Winter Souza. Also, Sister Jeannette Souza Parker. As well as many nieces and nephews.
Richard is proceeded in death by Father Manuel Marks Souza Sr, Mother Mary Dolores Bernard Souza, Brothers Manuel Marks Souza Junior and Harold Marks Souza.
Richard’s family and friends will deeply miss his presence, stories, laughter, and unwavering love and support.
A graveside service will be held at Snelling Cemetery on June 10, 2026, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow at the Snelling Community Recreational Building.
Richard’s legacy of hard work, kindness, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew and loved him.
