Ross Farthing was born in Witchita, Kansas on April 4, 1927. He passed on January 5, 2012. He leaves behind the love of his life, Fern, his wife of 66 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Linda Snelling, grandchildren Emily and Matthew, their spouses Clay and Valerie, and great-grandchildren Alia Craig and Esme and Jude Snelling. Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Edward, and his siblings, Lee and Florine.
Ross spent his early childhood years in Prescott Arizona then moved to Merced in the early 1930s. He is a veteran of World War II, joining the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 and sailing around the world in service of his country.
Ross was a great lover of nature and animals. He enjoyed working outdoors as a tree surgeon in Merced and the surrounding area. He retired from Merced City Park and Recreation Department. Ross especially loved the ocean, and he and Fern enjoyed camping in their 5th wheel at Pismo Beach.
Ross’s family would like to express their gratitude to Ross’s two compassionate home health care workers, Nora and Carla and Hinds Hospice. Donations to Hinds Hospice can be made in Ross’s name. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, January 10 from 3pm to 7pm at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home. The graveside services will take place on Wednesday, January 11 at 11am at Evergreen Memorial Park.
