May 14, 1946 – September 20, 2025
We are saddened to announce the passing of Thomas Mark Weed on September 20, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. Husband of 56 years, father of eight and grandfather to 33, he left a legacy of faith and service.
Thomas was born in Seattle, Washington on May 14, 1946 to Mark B. Weed and Chloe Priday. The majority of his childhood was spent in Wilmington, Delaware. The oldest of six, he grew up in a home with loving parents who taught him to work hard and be responsible.
Thomas had a great love for learning and excelled at school. After graduating from Brandywine High School, he attended Brigham Young University–a decision that led him to his wife, Janet Callister. After their marriage he studied medicine at the University of Utah, and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. He served in the US Navy living in Maryland, Mississippi, and South Carolina. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he searched for a practice. His father advised him to go where he was needed. That led him to practice Ophthalmology in Merced, California for 35 years.
Tom had an incredible memory, dry sense of humor, and a beautiful singing voice. He was the family Boggle champion, crossword puzzler, and homework helper. He was always quick to pull out the Atlas, Encyclopedia or scriptures when his children came to him with questions.
He loved to travel and learn new things - whether it was taking the “scenic route” home, stopping to read an historic marker along the road, or traveling the world. If the kids had a day off of school, there was a good chance you would find them with their dad in Yosemite. If he planned a vacation, each day would begin by 7:00 am. He enjoyed planning trips with his wife, Janet, going to places such as South and Central America, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and various destinations within the United States.
Tom was a man of faith. His children would often find him on his knees in prayer, sitting at his desk studying the scriptures, or hearing him pray for their specific needs at family meals. His advice was measured and thoughtful.
He was a man of service. Tom served the community of Merced for over 35 years as an Opthamologist and church leader. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served two and half years in Japan as a young missionary. Over the years he served in various callings in the church as bishop, stake president, patriarch and temple president. But much of his service was informal and known only to the receiver.
After his diagnosis, he became even more committed to his family and his faith in Jesus Christ. During that time he and Janet served a church mission in Springfield, Massachusetts and three years as the Fresno California Temple president. Between rounds of chemotherapy, he would visit family or work as a sealer in the temple. His greatest desire was for his efforts to be accepted by the Lord.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Callister Weed and children Julie Vistaunet (David), Matthew Weed (Julie), Mark Weed (Evelyn), Spencer Weed, Amy Edwards (Barrett), Kimberly Hepworth (Ammon), Jennifer Castleton (Jeffrey), and Rebecca Severson (Paul) and 33 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to seek this Jesus who Tom knew so well. Find someone to serve, attend the temple, meet with the missionaries, forgive someone, or spend time with a loved one.
A viewing will be held Sunday, October 5, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B Street Merced, California.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held Monday, October 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1080 E. Yosemite Avenue, Merced, California.
