Virginia Sue Hogue

Ginny (Virginia) Sue Hogue, born on May 18, 1943, in Pasadena, California, left this world peacefully, surrounded by love. She was the cherished daughter of John (Jack) and Wilma Layng and is survived by her loving son, Paul (Andrea) Hogue; daughter-in-law, Lisa Hogue; grandchildren, Myles (Edan) Starling, Kierstie (Kory) Mangles, and Rocky Hogue; and great-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Ace Mangles. Ginny is also remembered by her sister, Jackie Layng, and brother Michael Layng. Preceded in death by her husband, Glen, and sons, Steve and John. Ginny was devoted to family, and her legacy will forever be cherished by those who knew her.

Ginny’s roots run deep, with grandparents who immigrated to the United States from Sweden and Ireland in the late 1800s. Raised in a close-knit family, she often shared stories about her happy childhood, spent climbing trees and playing with her cousin Julie and her siblings. Family traditions were central to Ginny’s life, particularly the cherished Saturdays spent at Huntington Beach.

At 15, Ginny moved to Merced, California, where she met the love of her life, Glen Hogue. Their bond grew quickly, leading to a beautiful union on December 30, 1961. Together, they welcomed three sons, Steve, John, and Paul, and created a loving home filled with laughter and adventure. As a mother, Ginny was known for her feisty spirit, her love of games, and for instilling in her boys a sense of competition and fellowship.

Ginny's heart swelled with joy as a grandmother to Myles, Kierstie, and Rocky, attending dance recitals, sports events, and school functions. The joy of having great-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Ace, brought her immense happiness, and she never missed an opportunity to cheer them on.

The holidays were Ginny’s favorite time of year, particularly Christmas, when she cherished family gatherings and continued beloved traditions. Her warm spirit and kindness made her a surrogate parent to many of her sons' friends throughout their childhoods.

Ginny dedicated many years to serving as a secretary for Merced City Schools. After her retirement, she and Glen enjoyed fulfilling adventures across the country in their fifth-wheel trailer, exploring the beauty of Alaska, the Florida Keys, and various states in between. She was actively involved in the Lutheran churches in both Merced and Mariposa. As a devoted Christian, Ginny strove to help create smooth, organized services.

Glen's passing in December deeply affected Ginny, whose love for him knew no bounds. We take comfort in knowing that he welcomed her with open arms as they begin their next great adventure together.

Ginny will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Her legacy of love, laughter, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mariposa Lutheran Church, with a reception to follow. Ginny will be laid to rest at the Merced District Cemetery in a graveside service for the family. Stratford-Evans is making funeral arrangements. The family suggests that donations be made to the Mariposa Lutheran Church in Ginny’s memory.
