Virginia Long

Our loving mother, Virginia (Jean) Long, passed away on December 27, 2020 at the age of 92. She was born in New Jersey on April 22nd ,1928 to Edward and Julia Reisenwitz and was raised in Pennsylvania with her sister Betty, and brothers Edward, Robert and David. In 1954, while attending her brother Bob’s graduation from Flight School with the USAF, she met our dad, Donald Long. He was also a USAF Pilot and they married in April of 1955. They were stationed at several bases throughout the country before they settled in Merced where they raised their 5 children.

During her 59 years in Merced, mom enjoyed working and volunteering in various ways. She worked 20 seasons at the local cannery, served on the Grand Jury, worked as a census taker and life insurance examiner. She volunteered alongside other proud parents as a Brownie leader, classroom helper, snack shack worker, shuttle driver and in many other ways showing love and support for her children. She had a huge heart for animals and served as President of the Merced SPCA for several years. Our mom could never let a stray cat stay cold or hungry and welcomed many dogs, chickens and other pets into our family.

Our mom was loved by all who knew her. She was a good friend to many and a 2nd mom to our childhood friends. Above all else, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother. We each know how deeply she loved us and are thankful for all the years we were blessed to have her. She will be missed each and every day.

Surviving family members include her children, Michael Long and his wife Anne, Julie Burnthorne and her husband Bret, daughters Lori Long and Lisa Boyer, her brother Robert Reisenwitz and his wife Marilyn, her loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other relatives she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald and son Donald Jr. along with her parents and 3 of her siblings.
