One cannot mention Virginia, “Ginnie” Marcotte without thinking of her passion for living; she had a smile for all and made sure that everyone in the room felt welcome. Ginnie had a song on her lips, a dance in her step and was always ready for an adventure. Her love of life and learning inspired her children, grandchildren and great– grandchildren to explore the world and to never stop being curious.
As a young girl in Haddonfield, New Jersey, Ginnie, with her brother (Walter) and sisters (Doris, Vivian and Joan), grew up in a loving family with their parents and was lucky enough to know her grandparents living next door. Their family was one of generosity and support and the siblings spent their youth creating memories together with school friends and loved ones.
As World War II began, and “her sweetheart”, John, joined the Air Force, they spontaneously married as he began pilot training and almost immediately left for Europe. She endured the adversity of his absence and the unknowns of his time as a prisoner of war until they were ultimately reunited at the war’s end. John and Ginnie then began their life together as he continued his military career as a fighter pilot. With John spending much time flying, it was up to Ginnie to take care of the Home Front. Over the years, the family would move from air base to air base, and Ginnie ensured that each change went smoothly and that her children were settled. She was heavily involved in the Wive’s Club in each new location and spent tremendous time planning entertainment and charitable events for their military family.
After retirement from the Air Force, the couple decided to settle down in Merced, California; however, Ginnie’s love of travel and adventure did not end. She spent her remaining years working with the local organizations and clubs to plan fundraisers and charity events. Ginnie became an integral part of the community and on any given day could be seen participating in golf tournaments, attending symphonies, or hosting a tea party for dear friends. Throughout the years, her house was one of joy and love, as her grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren would visit often. With her official title of “Grandmere”, she became the heart and soul of the family. From playing paper dolls early in the morning to helping create a skit, dance party, or fashion show, she made each child feel special.
Virginia is survived by her sons, John Marcotte, Jr (m. to Janis Marcotte) and Terry Marcotte; her grandchildren, Monica (m. to Brad) and Michelle (m. to Jeff); and her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Tyler, and Kara. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Marcotte, Sr. and son, Timothy Marcotte. After 101 years, her stories and memories served as an inspiration to us all. We are so sad that she has passed on but know that she is reuniting with loved ones waiting for her.
A mass will be held on Friday, November 14th, 2025 at Saint Patrick's Church at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Diabetes Association.
