Mrs. Hodgins was born June 30, 1918 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, and was the daughter of late Joseph Baxter Richardson and Ida Pearl Miles Richardson. She attended East Mississippi Junior College where she studied history. She enjoyed reading, studying maps, sewing, cooking and watching her shows.
On March 16, 1944 she married Frank Ozell “Big Daddy” Hodgins who preceded her in death October 16, 2004.
In 1968, with the birth of her first grandchild, she became affectionately known as Big Mama. Big Mama and Big Daddy’s home was always ground zero for family gatherings and a favorite destination of their many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Big Mama could most often be found in her kitchen preparing any of her family’s menu of favorites such as chicken dumplings, dressing, or cherry crunch. She was a fun-loving soul who was loved and adored by her family.
Surviving are her children: Gloria Evans of Harrisonburg, VA; Debbie Scarbrough (Ray) of Ormond Beach, FL; daughter-in-law Sandra Hodgins of Meridian, MS; 6 grandchildren: Kim Waddell, Jason Hodgins, Todd Evans (Katia), Stephanie Lewis (Scott), Alicia Scarbrough, and Greg Evans; 10 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; and 8 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Gary Hodgins; great grandsons Drake Hodgins and Codie Barlow; and many loved extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12pm at Stephens Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Ronald Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Meridian Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
