Capt. Dimitrios Gavakis was born in Ag.Vasilios, Gythion, Greece. After Graduating High School he went on to attend The Greek Maritime Academy. He had a very successful career at sea and became a Ship’s Captain at the young age of 36.
He married his wife Sandra from Scotland in 1975 and in 1979 their son Michael was born.
As a family they spent many years traveling the world on board Chandris Lines (now Celebrity Cruises)Holland America Cruise Lines and Dolphin Cruises.
In 1984 Dimitrios and his family came to Port Canaveral to start a new position as Director of Maritime Operations for Premier Cruise Lines, The Big Red Boats that cruised out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. In 1994 he returned to sea as Captain on Board the The Dolphin where he was for many years, also on Board the Regal Empress out of Port Manatee and the Texas Treasure out of Aransas Pass, Texas. He was cruising out of New York City when the Twin Towers were attacked. In later years he became Senior Surveyor for Petromar International, flying out by helicopter to board the oil tankers that were too large to come into port was one of his favorite aspects of the job.
He loved living in Merritt Island playing golf, going to the beach and dining out at weekends with his close friends. He loved to cook and entertain and going to the gym and movies. Travel was high on his agenda and many vacations were spent in Greece and India and the Caribbean and his favorite islands of the Bahamas.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Sandra and son Michael; Brothers Nick and Gregory; Sisters Olga, Noula and Villy; Brothers and Sisters - in Law Iannis, Dimitrios, Patricia, Elspeth and Bill; Nephews and Nieces Emmi, Stellios, Nadia, Dino, Nastos, Emilina, Derek, Craig and Lynne. In lieu of flowers :-) Enjoy life to the fullest as Dimitrios always did.
