

George Furis, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 86. He was a proud 28-year Air Force veteran, serving with distinction from May 31, 1955, to October 25, 1968, and again from June 25, 1971, to January 31, 1986. Throughout his career, he served in France, Vietnam, and Thailand and worked as an Aircraft Electrical Engineer.
After retiring from the Air Force, George continued to serve his fellow veterans by volunteering as a Service Officer for the local Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 123, for 24 years. In this role, he assisted veterans in applying for VA benefits, offering invaluable support to those who served our country. He also volunteered at the VA Clinic in Viera and participated in numerous Military Stand Downs, helping veterans in need. In 2015 He was awarded the President's lifetime achievement award for his volunteer service to our veterans.
In addition to his service work, George was employed by the United States Post Office for three years and contributed to the community through his role as the writer of the monthly newsletter for the Civil War Round Table of Central Florida (Cocoa) for many years. He was also an active member of the Space Coast Sams, Chapter 10.
George was born to Mary Moran (deceased) and George Furis (deceased). He is survived by his devoted wife, Lee Furis, with whom he shared 48 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they had six children: Cathy Hague, Jim Furis (Annese), Lisa Stewart (Tim), Donna Wood, Mitch Madden (Chente), and Dawn Madden.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and is also survived by his grandchildren: Chris Whitley, Shelley Lynn, Jesse Briscoe, Bethany Miller, Caitlin Briscoe, Alex Furis, Zane Furis, Jessi Fielder, Rebekah Fielder, Hannah Fielder, Zach Stewart, Steven Stewart, Amanda Stewart, Kyle Shirley, Thea van Gool, Anneliese van Gool, and Gillian van Gool. Additionally, George is survived by 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
George will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many veterans he helped throughout his life.
A graveside service for George will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, FL 32754, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Merritt Island, FL 32952.
